Laser Dentistry Q & A

What is laser dentistry?

Laser dentistry uses energy-based devices to perform dental procedures that usually involve drills and scalpels. Dental lasers use highly-concentrated beams of light energy to remove or reshape soft or hard tissue in the mouth, including the gums, teeth, and bone.

What are the different types of laser dentistry technology?

Dr. Molnar uses two types of lasers at his office:

BioLase® Waterlase

This innovative tool uses laser energy to remove gum tissue or reshape teeth while high-powered streams of water and air moisturize and soothe the surrounding tissue.

DIAGNOdent

The DIAGNOdent laser measures the levels of fluorescence in your teeth for early cavity detection. Dr. Molnar can then analyze your other teeth against this initial reading. High levels of fluorescence typically indicate a cavity’s presence.

What are the uses of laser dentistry?

Dr. Molnar uses lasers to perform many common procedures, such as:

Gum contouring

The BioLase Waterlase device can reshape your gum tissue for a more attractive appearance. This treatment is ideal if you have an uneven gum line or a “gummy smile,” where a significant portion of your gums is visible when you smile.

Periodontal treatment

The Waterlase device can also remove infected gum tissue and sterilize your gums for a healthier smile.

Frenectomy

The frenum is a small piece of tissue that connects your upper lip, gums, and tongue to the floor of your mouth. If a frenum is too large or tight, it can cause aesthetic problems or speech impediments. During a frenectomy, Dr. Molnar removes the excess tissues.

Dental restoration placement

Veneers, crowns, and bridges typically require the removal of tissue to ensure a natural-looking fit. Laser dentistry allows Dr. Molnar to remove as little tissue as possible to preserve your natural tooth structure.

Tooth decay treatment

Lasers also allow Dr. Molnar to remove diseased tissue and decay before placing a protective filling or crown.

Crown lengthening

If you have a tooth broken near or below your gum line, Dr. Molnar may remove some tissue with a laser device to expose your tooth.

Cold sore treatment

Lasers can sterilize a cold sore and eliminate bacteria to accelerate the natural healing process.

Laser dentistry enables Dr. Molnar to perform safe, precise treatments with minimal pain, bleeding, and downtime. To schedule an appointment, call Michael Molnar, DDS, today or use the online booking tool.
