TMJ

If the jaw joints are strained, it can cause many unpleasant symptoms, such as facial pain, tooth wear, and locking or clicking or the jaw.

TMJ treatment can alleviate the uncomfortable effects of this condition by relieving strain on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs).

At The Offices of Michael G. Molnar in Tarrytown, NY, our dental team offers effective non-surgical treatments for TMJ disorder.

The Causes of TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joints allow the jaw to move from side to side and up and down. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can occur when the cartilage disc inside the joint moves out of alignment, becomes eroded, or is damaged due to injury. TMD can also occur when the joints become strained due to a misaligned bite, causing you to overcompensate in order to achieve a comfortable resting position between jaws. These issues can result in a number of uncomfortable symptoms for patients.

Effective and Conservative Treatment
Bite Splint Therapy for Temporomandibular Disorders

bite splint

When treating TMD, it is always best to start with conservative treatments. At the Offices of Michael G. Molnar in Tarrytown, NY, our dentist offers bite splint therapy. The splint is custom designed to fit your mouth, move your jaws into their proper positions, prevent clenching, and relieve strain on the temporomandibular joints. If the cartilage disc has slipped out of position, the splint can help it to move back to its proper place.

The Treatment Process

When patients visit our Tarrytown practice to address TMJ problems, they can expect the following:

Exam

If you suspect you have TMD, Dr. Molnar will conduct a comprehensive exam to evaluate your oral health and your jaw joints. He will visually examine and feel the TMJ area, and take digital X-rays as needed to check the health of your teeth and jaw joints. If TMJ problems are identified, we may recommend bite splint therapy.

Impressions

Next, we will take impressions of your teeth so we can craft a custom TMJ mouth splint.

Fabrication

We will send your impressions and other information to our trusted dental lab, where technicians will fabricate your custom bite splint.

Starting Treatment

When your splint is ready, a process that typically takes a few weeks, you can return to our office to try it on. Dr. Molnar typically advises patients to wear the TMJ splint while they sleep.

Follow-Up Visits

To achieve the best results from bite splint therapy, patients should see their dentist for follow-up visits. These dental appointments allow Dr. Molnar to make any necessary adjustments and ensure that their TMJ treatment plan is as effective as possible. For many patients, bite splint therapy is all they need to treat TMD.
